Leading for Equity Workshops

Equity Workshops

Trainings to prepare rising leaders of educational organizations, schools, & districts to lead in ways that create equitable schools and organizations.

The History

When our founder Karima Wilson was an Assistant Principal at KIPP Sharpstown College Prep, she led a workshop at the annual KIPP School Summit to help participants have conversations about topics of equity. In her own school, she was seeing too many avoided conversations and failed dialogue about the issues that matter most. Participants reflected on how their own identities showed up in conversations and practices strategies for addressing the issues of equity.

This session led to Karima working with the Miles Family Fellowship program for over a decade in supporting the growth and development of those rising leaders. Over the years, the program has changed to address school-wide issues of leadership and equity. Whether helping leaders practice difficult conversations across lines of difference or supporting leaders in analyzing school practices for inequitable outcomes, the Leading for Equity Workshops help current and future leaders think about their role, their power, and their ability to make their schools more equitable.

Our Approach

The Leading for Equity Workshops bring together each of the tenets of our approach: Shared Knowledge, Shared Vision, Collective Capacity, and Guiding Action. As a cohort, rising leaders come together to reimagine what their schools could look like. The program supports their work by helping them to further develop their critical consciousness and understand the historical and political context of their work, and by providing them opportunities to practice taking actions that create change within their schools and organizations.
